Hawaiian Luau Visitors' Trip Tips

Most visitors to Hawaii enjoy attending a luau, but what should one expect to see and eat? Here is general luau information and descriptions of two Maui Hawaiian feasts.

For most visitors to the Hawaiian Islands, a vacation "must do" is attending a luau. Hawaiian luaus are held through many hotels and at many beaches. These are flamboyant affairs full of lots of Hawaii's authentic music, tropical and traditional food, drink, and island culture. Generally, luau's are all-you-can-eat and drink feasts with loads of entertainment that will be enjoyed by the whole family or a couple wishing for a special evening out. Maui is a great island for finding a fun luau.

What One Might Do and See at a Luau

Fun, excitement, and unique foods are all part of a Hawaii luau. Guests can expect to see talented Hawaiian performances of the native hula dance, see and hear live Hawaiian music, and see native peoples wearing costumes from the islands. Weather permitting, there is often a an amazing fire knife dancer performing. Some luaus offer fashion shows or south pacific drum dances.

A Hawaiian Feast

There will almost certainly be a huge Kalua pig cooked in an large imu pit, as a highlight. Other wonderful exotic foods, including the Hawaiian delicacy lomi lomi salmon, may be served, along with poi, tropical fruits, and other local delicacies.

The Royal Lahaina Ka'anapali Beach Luau on Maui

At the Royal Lahaina (Hotel) Luau at famous Ka’anapali Beach, guests are greeted with a shell lei (a necklace of greeting and aloha). Everyone then gathers around the imu (underground oven - photo below) for the traditional unwrapping of the massive Kalua pig. At this event, the master of ceremonies leads an evening of dancers, musicians, and fire knife dancers. Performances from Samoa, Tahiti and Hawaii are included.

The Royal Lahaina offers a buffet including local island foods, many special delicacies, and delicious desserts. If children are along, they are invited to learn the hula on the stage.

Prices run about $49.95 for adults and $44.00 for children over 11 years. One child ll years and under is free per paying adult.

Marriott Luau on Maui

"First-Rate premium seating at the Marriott Luau in Wailea! Give your family the best." - Hawaiian Discount Activities says about the luau at the Maui Marriott.

At about twice the price ot the Royal Lahaina luau, this beachside luau also begins with a shell lei greeting. Escorts lead guests to their tables. After the imu underground oven ceremony, guests learn how to husk a coconut. There is also an entertaining Polynesian program.

Throughout the evening, an open bar with pina coladas, mai tais, and more is available to those 21 and over. The buffet dinner includes Grilled Teriyaki Steak, Kalua Pig, Huli Huli Chicken, Fresh Fruits, Mahi Mahi, Island Style Fried Rice, Hawai’ian Sweet Potatoes and more. Guests will see and hear the history of Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, Tahiti and the Hawai’ian Islands. Three Samoan fire-knife dancers (photo below) will also perform, weather permitting.

Prices for premium seats run about $99.95 for adults and $59.00 for children.
